Botanical MonoPrints
plants, oil-based ink on paper
“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden
This body of work portrays an investigation into the transient existence of natural material and the mindfulness we must practice to notice and honor it. Plant materials are foraged and brought into the studio, where they are inked and pressed between lightweight papers, resulting in a mirrored pair of unique prints. This process sacrifices the original plant in exchange for an impression of what it once was, distilled into shape, form, and texture. Where the organic material is fleeting, the imprint memorializes its existence, but not without destroying it first. This process necessitates presence of mind and the appreciation of the individual. Plants are chosen with care, highlighting personal experience and connection. The resulting prints are a study of process, nature, and the intricacies of the plants that have shaped my experience.
